Port of Discharge (POD)

Illustration for Port of Discharge (POD), Shipping Modes

The port where cargo is unloaded from the vessel. Not to be confused with proof of delivery in last-mile logistics — context determines meaning.

In depth

The port of discharge (POD) is where the vessel unloads cargo for the ocean leg. It may differ from final inland destination: e.g. discharged at Los Angeles, railed to Chicago. Quotes should state POD vs final delivery clearly.

Key points

  • Do not confuse with place of delivery under DAP/DDP
  • Feeder vessels may connect hub POD to smaller ports
  • Import customs may clear at POD or inland port of entry
  • POD congestion affects demurrage and supply chain timing
