Customs
Authorised Economic Operator (AEO)
A status granted by a customs authority to traders that meet security and compliance standards, giving them faster clearance and fewer inspections.
In depth
AEO is a trusted-trader programme built on the WCO SAFE framework. Certification requires demonstrating a compliance history, solid record-keeping, financial soundness, and physical and IT security, and it is assessed by audit. The benefits are practical rather than financial: lower inspection rates, priority treatment when inspections do happen, simplified declarations, and recognition in countries that have mutual recognition agreements with the certifying authority. Equivalent schemes run under different names, including C-TPAT in the United States.
Key points
- Trusted-trader status based on the WCO SAFE framework
- Requires audited compliance, record-keeping, and security standards
- Delivers fewer inspections and priority treatment, not duty savings
