Pricing & Surcharges
Detention
A charge when a shipper or consignee holds a carrier container outside the port or depot beyond the allowed free days. Applies to equipment use, not port storage.
In depth
Detention is a per-diem charge for keeping the carrier’s container outside the terminal past allowed free time. It applies while the box is at the consignee’s site for unloading or at the shipper’s site for loading. Returning empty equipment on time avoids penalties.
Key points
- Applies to carrier-owned containers off-terminal
- Empty return date is critical: monitor line notifications
- Combine with demurrage planning for total port-to-door cost
- SOC (shipper-owned) containers avoid carrier detention but have other risks
