HS Code

Illustration for HS Code, Customs

Harmonised System code used worldwide to classify goods for customs duties and trade statistics. The first six digits are harmonised globally; countries add further digits for national classification.

In depth

Harmonised System codes classify goods for customs duty, statistics, and trade measures (anti-dumping, quotas, sanctions). The global 6-digit HS is extended nationally: e.g. 10-digit HTS in the US, 10-digit TARIC in the EU. Wrong classification risks penalties and back-duty.

Key points

  • First 6 digits harmonised internationally; digits 7+ are national
  • Classification depends on function, material, and degree of processing
  • Drives duty rate, FTA eligibility, and export controls
  • Review when product design changes: SKU updates need HS review
