LCL (Less than Container Load)

Illustration for LCL (Less than Container Load), Shipping Modes

Cargo that does not fill a full container and shares space with other shippers cargo, consolidated at a container freight station. Priced per CBM or weight, whichever is higher.

In depth

LCL is economical for smaller volumes but adds consolidation handling at origin and deconsolidation at destination. Pricing uses CBM or weight (W/M (weight or measure, whichever is higher). Transit time includes CFS handling and co-loading with other shippers.

Key points

  • Rated on CBM or per-tonne, whichever yields higher revenue for carrier
  • More touch points: higher damage risk; good packaging essential
  • Expect 5–10 extra days vs FCL for consolidation
  • Minimum charges apply: very small shipments may be costly per unit
