VGM (Verified Gross Mass)

Illustration for VGM (Verified Gross Mass), Documentation

The certified total weight of a packed container required under SOLAS before loading on a vessel. Shippers must provide VGM to the carrier; inaccurate VGM can result in fines or loading refusal.

In depth

Verified Gross Mass (VGM) is mandatory under SOLAS before loading. The shipper (or authorised party) must weigh the packed container (Method 1) or sum cargo weight plus tare (Method 2) and submit signed VGM to the terminal. No VGM means no load.

Key points

  • Responsibility lies with shipper on the ocean B/L
  • Method 1: weigh packed container; Method 2: certified calculation
  • Cut-off is typically 24–48 hours before vessel closing
  • Misdeclared weight risks fines and safety incidents
