LTL Freight Quotes: How to Get One, Read It, and Compare It

Frequently Asked Questions

How is an LTL freight quote calculated?+

From freight class, distance, weight, accessorials and a fuel surcharge. Freight class is the part shippers control — it reflects density, handling, stowability and liability, with density (pounds per cubic foot) the main input for most commodities. Lower class means denser cargo and a cheaper rate.

Why was my LTL shipment reclassified?+

Because the carrier measured and weighed it and the result did not match what was declared — usually estimated dimensions, pallets taller than stated, or wrap and overhang adding volume. The shipment is re-rated and the corrected charge appears on the invoice later. Measuring the pallet as it will actually ship prevents it.

What are LTL accessorial charges?+

Services beyond dock-to-dock pickup and delivery: liftgate where there is no dock, residential or limited-access delivery, inside delivery, and appointment scheduling. Each is a separate charge, and every one is cheaper declared when you request the quote than discovered at delivery.
