Less-than-truckload pricing confuses shippers coming from international freight, because it is built on a different logic. Ocean and air price on volume or chargeable weight. LTL prices on freight class, a classification system that folds density, handling, stowability and liability into a single number, and getting it wrong is the most common cause of an invoice that does not match the quote.
The short answer
An LTL quote is driven by freight class, distance, weight, accessorials and fuel. Freight class is the part shippers control and most often get wrong: it derives largely from density (pounds per cubic foot), and an under-declared class gets corrected by the carrier after the fact, with a re-rated invoice. Supply accurate dimensions and weight, declare accessorials up front, and the quote will hold.
What actually drives the number

Why shipments get reclassified
Carriers inspect and re-measure. If the declared class does not match what arrives, because dimensions were estimated, pallets were taller than stated, or shrink wrap added volume. The shipment is re-rated and the corrected charge appears on the invoice, often weeks later. Reclassification is not a penalty; it is the system working as designed on better data.
The practical defence is unglamorous: measure the pallet as it will actually ship, including wrap and overhang, and weigh it rather than estimating. If you are unsure of class, say so and ask the provider to classify it. A provider who classifies for you owns the answer.
The accessorials that surprise people
- Liftgate: needed anywhere without a dock, at both ends.
- Residential delivery: including many small businesses run from residential addresses.
- Limited access: schools, construction sites, farms, military bases, self-storage.
- Inside delivery: past the threshold rather than to it.
- Appointment / timed delivery: common for retail DCs and almost always chargeable.
Every one of these is cheaper declared up front than discovered at delivery.
What to supply for an accurate LTL quote
- Origin and destination postal codes, and whether each has a dock.
- Pallet count, and dimensions of each as shipped, including wrap and any overhang.
- Actual gross weight, weighed.
- Commodity description, and freight class if you know it.
- Stackable or not.
- Every accessorial you might need at either end.
- Ready date and any delivery window.
How LTL compares to the alternatives
For domestic road freight, LTL sits between parcel and full truckload. Parcel is usually cheaper for small, light, individually-handled boxes; full truckload becomes competitive once you are filling most of a trailer or the cargo is fragile enough that a single handling matters.
