LTL Freight Quotes: How to Get One, Read It, and Compare It

Frequently Asked Questions

How is an LTL freight quote calculated?+

From freight class, distance, weight, accessorials and a fuel surcharge. Freight class is the part shippers control. It reflects density, handling, stowability and liability, with density (pounds per cubic foot) the main input for most commodities. Lower class means denser cargo and a cheaper rate.

Why was my LTL shipment reclassified?+

Because the carrier measured and weighed it and the result did not match what was declared, usually estimated dimensions, pallets taller than stated, or wrap and overhang adding volume. The shipment is re-rated and the corrected charge appears on the invoice later. Measuring the pallet as it will actually ship prevents it.

What are LTL accessorial charges?+

Services beyond dock-to-dock pickup and delivery: liftgate where there is no dock, residential or limited-access delivery, inside delivery, and appointment scheduling. Each is a separate charge, and every one is cheaper declared when you request the quote than discovered at delivery.
