Out of Gauge (OOG)
Cargo whose dimensions exceed the internal or external envelope of a standard container, protruding in height, width, or length.

Out of gauge cargo travels on flat racks or open tops with the load extending beyond the container profile. Because the overhang blocks adjacent slots on the vessel, carriers charge for the slots lost as well as the cargo carried, which is why OOG rates look disproportionate to the volume moved. Stowage is restricted to positions that can accommodate the protrusion, so space is limited and bookings need longer lead times. Accurate dimensions including any packing and cradle are essential — an understated measurement discovered at the terminal can see the shipment refused.
