Most international freight moves in a standard container, and most freight guidance assumes it. Breakbulk and project cargo exist for everything that does not fit that assumption: cargo too large, too heavy, or too irregularly shaped to load into a box, that instead has to be planned, lifted, and stowed piece by piece.
What counts as breakbulk
Breakbulk cargo is non-containerized freight loaded individually rather than packed into a standard unit. Classic examples include steel coils and plates, timber and lumber, machinery components, yachts, and bagged or palletized goods too large or too heavy for efficient container loading. It moves on general cargo vessels or multipurpose vessels equipped with their own cranes, rather than the gantry cranes used for container terminals, and stowage is planned piece by piece rather than slot by slot.
What counts as project cargo
Project cargo is a wider category: the shipment of equipment and materials for a specific industrial project, typically infrastructure, energy, or heavy manufacturing. A single project cargo move might include breakbulk pieces (a transformer, a generator), roll-on-roll-off units (wheeled construction equipment), and standard containers (spare parts, tools, documentation) all coordinated as one logistics exercise with a shared delivery deadline. What defines project cargo is less the cargo type and more the coordination requirement: multiple pieces, multiple modes, and a schedule tied to a construction or commissioning timeline that does not tolerate the kind of delay a standard shipment might absorb.
Where the line sits against flat rack and open top containers
Oversized cargo does not automatically mean breakbulk. Flat rack containers (no sides, cargo lashed to the base) and open top containers (removable roof, loaded from above) handle cargo that exceeds standard container dimensions but can still be craned and stowed within a container vessel's normal stowage plan. Once a piece exceeds the flat rack's dimensional or weight limits, or requires deck stowage with custom lashing arrangements a container crane cannot execute, it moves into genuine breakbulk handling on a dedicated vessel. Planning a breakbulk or project cargo move
- Confirm dimensions and weight early, including packing. The packed weight and dimensions, not the bare equipment specification, determine what handling equipment and vessel stowage are needed.
- Check the full route, not just the ocean leg. An oversized piece that clears a port fine can still be blocked by a low bridge or narrow road on the inland leg, so route surveys for abnormal loads happen before booking, not after.
- Get a lashing and securing plan, not just a freight quote. How a piece will be secured for the voyage affects both cost and insurability, and it should be specified before the vessel is booked.
- Build in schedule buffer. Breakbulk vessels sail on less frequent schedules than container liner services, and a missed sailing can mean a multi-week wait for the next available vessel on some trades.
- Insure to the actual replacement and reinstallation cost, not just the equipment's purchase price, since project cargo often carries significant costs to reinstall or replace if damaged in transit.
