Cold Chain Data Loggers and Temperature Excursions

Frequently Asked Questions

What should you do when a cold chain shipment shows a temperature excursion?+

Quarantine the product, keep it at the correct storage condition, do not destroy it, and notify your quality function immediately with the full temperature trace. Record it as a deviation. The release decision belongs to the marketing authorisation holder or qualified person assessing the product against its stability data.

What is mean kinetic temperature?+

A single calculated temperature expressing the cumulative thermal stress of a variable temperature history, weighting higher temperatures more heavily than a simple average because degradation accelerates with heat. It is useful for assessing overall exposure but does not neutralise a short severe spike, which can still be product critical.

Where should a data logger be placed in a shipment?+

With the product rather than on the outside of the packaging, because surface temperature is not product temperature. For pallet shipments, place loggers at the positions your temperature mapping identifies as highest risk, typically the outer edges and the top of the load, and start the device after packing rather than in the packing room.
