How it works

Measure length, width, and height in centimeters, multiply them together to get the volume in cubic centimeters, then divide by the divisor for your service. Air cargo uses a standard divisor of 6,000, so a shipment that takes up a lot of space relative to its weight ends up with a high volumetric figure even if it barely registers on a scale. Multiply by piece count if you have several identical packages.

Carriers then bill whichever is higher: your actual gross weight or the volumetric weight you just calculated. This protects the airline's revenue on light, bulky cargo — a pallet of pillows and a pallet of steel brackets might weigh the same on paper, but the pillows take up far more aircraft space, so volumetric weight makes sure the airline is paid for the space it can't sell to anyone else.

If your dimensions are in inches, convert to centimeters first (multiply by 2.54) before applying the divisor. Using the wrong unit is the most common reason a chargeable weight figure looks wildly wrong.

Why do air carriers divide by 6,000?

6,000 is the IATA-standard volumetric divisor for air cargo, chosen to approximate the density at which a shipment starts costing an airline more in space than it earns in revenue per kilo. Cargo denser than roughly 167 kg/m³ gets billed on gross weight instead, since volume stops being the binding constraint at that point.

What's the difference between the air divisor (6,000) and the courier divisor (5,000)?

Both measure the same thing — volumetric weight — but courier and express networks (like parcel carriers) use a lower divisor of 5,000, which produces a higher volumetric weight for the same dimensions. That reflects their smaller aircraft and vehicles, where cubic space is scarcer per shipment, so bulky-but-light parcels get billed more heavily than they would under standard air cargo rules.

What is the difference between dimensional weight and gross weight?

Gross weight is what your shipment weighs on a scale. Dimensional (volumetric) weight is a calculated figure based on the space it occupies. Carriers bill chargeable weight, which is simply the higher of the two — so a light, bulky shipment is billed on its volumetric weight, while a small, dense shipment is billed on its gross weight.

How can I reduce my chargeable weight?

Pack tighter to shrink the outer dimensions — remove excess void space, use right-sized cartons instead of oversized ones, and avoid packaging that adds bulk without adding protection. Consolidating several small boxes into fewer, better-packed cartons often lowers total volume even when the gross weight stays the same, since dimensional weight is driven entirely by the outer envelope of each piece.

Is chargeable weight used for sea freight?

No — chargeable (volumetric) weight is an air and courier concept. LCL ocean freight uses a different mechanism, weight or measure (W/M): the forwarder charges per revenue ton, taking the greater of 1 tonne or 1 CBM for the shipment — use our CBM calculator to get that volume figure. FCL is different again: you pay a flat rate per container regardless of how it is packed, up to the box's maximum payload, so volume and weight only matter for choosing container size, not for pricing the box itself.
