The moment your cargo will not fit inside a standard container, you leave the world of rates and enter the world of engineering. Project and out-of-gauge freight is priced per shipment, planned weeks ahead, and quoted only after someone has checked whether the route physically works. Here is what actually changes.
What counts as out-of-gauge

The dividing lines matter because each step up changes the vessel, the ports that can handle it, and the price by an order of magnitude. Check your dimensions against the container envelope first — container types and dimensions has the internal figures.
Why it is priced completely differently
Container freight is priced per box on a published tariff. Project cargo is priced per shipment, and the number is built from:
- The slots your cargo blocks. Overhanging cargo on a flat rack sterilises the slots beside and above it. You pay for those empty slots — often the single largest line.
- Lifting. Whether the cargo can be handled by standard terminal gear, or needs mobile cranes, and at both ends.
- Lashing and securing, engineered and signed off, sometimes classification-society approved.
- Route survey and permits for the road legs.
- Escorts, and sometimes physical modification of the route — temporarily removing signage or street furniture.
This is why an out-of-gauge quote takes days rather than minutes, and why a cheap quote that arrives quickly is usually a quote from someone who has not checked the route.
The route survey is the whole job
The port-to-port leg is rarely the hard part. The constraint is almost always the road leg between the factory and the port, or the port and the site — bridge clearances, roundabout radii, weight limits, overhead cables and level crossings. A survey checks the physical route end to end and produces a plan that permits are issued against.
Get the survey done before you commit to a delivery date. Discovering an impassable bridge after the vessel is booked converts a logistics problem into a contractual one.
What your forwarder needs from you
Vague dimensions are the main cause of wrong quotes. Provide, per piece:
- Exact dimensions — length, width, height, in the shipping condition, including any cradle, skid or protective frame.
- Actual weight, not an estimate.
- Centre of gravity, marked on the piece, and lifting points.
- Whether it can be tilted, laid down or dismantled. A piece that can be laid on its side sometimes returns to in-gauge and saves a fortune.
- Drawings or photographs with dimensions marked.
- Collection and delivery site constraints — access, hardstanding, available lifting gear.
- Fixed dates that cannot move, such as a plant shutdown window.
Lead times and insurance
Plan in weeks, not days. Multipurpose and heavy-lift vessels sail on thin schedules, permits take time, and specialist equipment is booked ahead. A realistic sequence is survey, then equipment and vessel booking, then permits, then execution — and each step depends on the one before it.
Insurance also needs attention. Standard cargo cover may not contemplate a single indivisible item worth more than the rest of your annual freight combined, and lifting operations are a distinct risk. Choosing a provider
This is one area where generalist forwarders genuinely should refer you on. Look for demonstrable experience with your type of cargo, in-house or contracted engineering capability, and a willingness to survey before quoting.
