Container Types and Dimensions: The Numbers That Decide Your Booking

Frequently Asked Questions

How many CBM fit in a 20ft container?+

A 20ft standard container has a nominal internal volume of roughly 33 CBM, but plan on loading 28 to 30 CBM in practice. The gap exists because real cargo loses space to carton dimensions that do not divide evenly into the container, pallet footprints and height, dunnage, and the gap at the door. Planning at 85 to 90 percent of nominal is realistic.

What is the maximum weight I can load in a container?+

A 20ft container typically permits around 28,000 kg of payload and a 40ft around 26,700 kg, but the binding limit is usually the road weight limit at origin and destination rather than the container itself. Those limits vary by country and axle configuration and are frequently in the 18 to 22 tonne range for the whole vehicle combination. Confirm the road limit before planning to the container plate.

When should I use a 40ft high cube instead of a 40ft standard?+

A 40ft high cube adds roughly 30cm of internal height, giving about 76 CBM against 68 for a standard, for a similar payload. It is the better choice for light bulky cargo that fills on volume before weight. For dense cargo that hits the weight limit first, the extra height is wasted and a standard 40ft or even two 20ft containers may work out better.
