Thailand is one of the smoothest origins in Southeast Asia to ship from: good port infrastructure, strong carrier connectivity, and English-language documentation as standard. It is not the cheapest labour market in the region, which is usually why it was not the first choice, but for anyone who has struggled with a harder origin, the operational reliability is worth real money.

Most Thai ocean exports to the US transship, commonly through Singapore, Port Klang or Tanjung Pelepas. That is normal on this lane and not a red flag, but it does add a lift and a connection risk, so ask whether your routing is direct or transhipped and factor it into your buffer. Routing to the US
- US West Coast: the shorter ocean routing, usually via a Southeast Asian transhipment hub into Los Angeles, Long Beach or Oakland, then rail or road inland.
- US East Coast: longer, routed either eastbound via the Suez Canal or through the Panama Canal, with correspondingly longer transit. Direct-to-East-Coast services avoid US transcontinental rail, which can be worth the extra sea days if your market is eastern.
- Air: from Suvarnabhumi, used for electronics, urgent automotive parts and perishables.

What actually ships from Thailand
- Automotive parts and components: Thailand is a major regional vehicle manufacturing base.
- Electronics and electrical goods, including hard drives and components.
- Processed food, seafood and rice: much of it temperature-controlled, so see what to specify for reefer cargo.
- Rubber and rubber products, plastics and polymers.
- Furniture, home goods and textiles.
Food and agricultural exports bring their own documentation and inspection requirements at the US end, which are a more common cause of delay on this lane than the ocean leg is.
Practical planning notes
- Confirm whether your routing transships, and where. It affects both transit and rolling risk, rolled cargo prevention.
- Check origin duty treatment. Thai goods may face different rates from Chinese goods for the same product, which is frequently the whole point of the sourcing move, rules of origin.
- Do not assume a China+1 move saves on freight. Thai ocean rates are not automatically lower, and sailing frequency to the US is thinner than from southern China. The saving usually comes from unit cost and duty. See China+1 sourcing.
- Plan around regional holidays, particularly Songkran in April, and note that much of your transhipment capacity is exposed to Chinese New Year regardless of your origin, the closure calendar.
- Use a forwarder with a Thai presence for collection, export clearance and inland trucking from the industrial estates to Laem Chabang.
