How it works

The stowage factor is a fraction representing how efficiently your cargo packs, where 1.0 means no loss at all. A factor of 0.85 means the cargo effectively needs about 18% more space than its measured CBM to stow properly — dividing actual volume by a factor below 1.0 always increases the effective figure, since you are spreading the same cargo over more usable space than its raw dimensions suggest.

Broken stowage is the industry term for that lost space: gaps left by irregular shapes, protruding parts, dunnage and bracing, or cargo that cannot be stacked tight against the next piece. It is separate from packing damage or loss — it is simply the geometry of real cargo not tessellating perfectly inside a box.

What is a typical broken stowage percentage?

It commonly falls in the 10-25% range depending on cargo type — uniform cartons on pallets tend toward the lower end, while irregular shapes, machinery, or mixed-size loads push toward the higher end. There is no single figure that applies across all cargo, so confirm the assumption your forwarder is using rather than defaulting to one number.

Why do LCL rates account for stowage factor?

LCL freight is priced on the space your cargo actually occupies in a shared container, not just its theoretical CBM. If broken stowage means your shipment effectively takes up more room than its raw measurement suggests, the forwarder is losing sellable space to that gap, so rates are typically built around effective (stowed) volume rather than actual volume alone.

What is the difference between stowage factor and density?

Density is a property of the cargo itself — its weight per unit volume, independent of how it is packed. Stowage factor describes packing efficiency — how much of the available space the cargo actually fills once loaded, which depends on shape, packaging, and loading method as much as the cargo's own density. Two shipments with identical density can have very different stowage factors depending on how regular or awkward their shapes are.

What causes poor stowage in the first place?

Irregular or protruding shapes that cannot be tightly stacked, oversized or undersized packaging relative to the container or trailer's dimensions, required dunnage and bracing for fragile or hazardous cargo, and mixing pallet sizes within the same load are the usual culprits. Standardizing carton or pallet dimensions ahead of booking is the most reliable way to push the stowage factor closer to 1.0.
