Truck and Trailer Types: Dimensions, Pallet Counts and Weight Limits

Frequently Asked Questions

How many pallets fit on a truck?+

A standard European 13.6 metre curtainsider takes 33 euro pallets of 1200 x 800 mm in a single layer, or 26 industrial pallets of 1200 x 1000 mm. A North American 53 foot dry van takes 26 GMA pallets of 48 x 40 inches single-stacked. Double-stacking increases these figures where the cargo and its packaging allow it, which is why stackability is one of the most important things to state when booking.

What is the weight limit for a truckload?+

It varies by country, axle configuration and permit. European gross combination weight is commonly limited to 40 tonnes, with higher allowances in some countries for intermodal container moves, leaving a payload in the region of 24 tonnes. The United States federal limit on interstates is commonly 80,000 lb gross, with axle limits that usually bind before the total does, giving a practical payload around 42,000 to 45,000 lb.

When should I use LTL instead of a full truckload?+

Full truckload buys the whole vehicle with one pickup and one delivery and no handling in between. Less-than-truckload buys space on a shared vehicle, which is cheaper for small volumes but adds terminal handling at each transfer, so more touches, longer transit and higher damage risk. The crossover is usually somewhere between a third and a half of the trailer, and it moves with lane and season.
