Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an HBL and an MBL?+

A house bill of lading is issued by the freight forwarder to you, the shipper, and governs your contract with the forwarder. A master bill of lading is issued by the actual carrier to the forwarder and governs the contract between them. On a consolidated shipment one master bill typically sits behind many house bills, and as a shipper you normally only ever see your house bill.

What does chargeable weight mean?+

Chargeable weight is the figure the carrier actually bills you on: the greater of the actual gross weight and the volumetric weight, where volumetric weight is derived from the cargo volume using a divisor that differs by mode. Light bulky cargo is billed on volume and dense cargo on weight, which is why oversized outer cartons quietly increase air and express freight cost.

What is the difference between demurrage and detention?+

Demurrage is charged when the container stays inside the terminal beyond the agreed free time, typically because it has not been collected after discharge. Detention is charged when the container has left the terminal but has not been returned empty within the free time. Both begin only once free time expires, and free time differs by carrier, port and contract, so confirm the days at both ends in writing.
