Which Freight Modes Actually Trade Online — Air, Ocean, Road and Rail

Frequently Asked Questions

Which freight modes can you actually book online?+

Ocean FCL and air are the most digitised, because a container and a chargeable kilo are standard units with visible capacity. Ocean LCL is quotable but rarely truly instant. Domestic road is mature via load boards; cross-border road is patchier. Rail is the least digitised because capacity is allocated through operators rather than sold openly.

Why can I get an instant rate for FCL but not LCL?+

A container is a standard unit with a predictable cost, so pricing is mechanical. LCL price depends on what else is in the consolidation that week and what the destination CFS charges, so it stays a human quote. That is also why LCL surprises usually come from destination charges rather than the freight itself.

Are instant freight rates trustworthy?+

For a standard shipment on a well-covered lane, yes. They become unreliable as soon as the shipment is not standard — overweight, out of gauge, hazardous, temperature-controlled, or on a thin lane. In those cases a quote from a provider who has seen the actual cargo details is the honest answer.
